What Does "Check Ration Card Number" Actually Mean?

When people search for "check ration card number," they usually want one of two things: either they want to verify that their RC number is correct and active, or they want to look up their card details using the number — like which family members are listed, what card type it is, and which Fair Price Shop it's assigned to.

Both are straightforward to do online. Every state in India has a food and civil supplies portal where you can enter your RC number and pull up all these details in about 30 seconds. The form at the top of this page takes you directly to the right URL for your state — no hunting around.

Why Your Ration Card Number Matters

Your RC number is your unique identifier in the Public Distribution System. You need it to:

• Check whether your card is active or has been suspended
• Verify which family members are enrolled on the card
• Download your e-Ration Card PDF from the official portal
• Port your card to another state under the One Nation One Ration Card scheme
• Apply for corrections — name change, address update, member addition or removal
• Claim entitlement at any Fair Price Shop using biometric verification

Ration Card Number Formats Across India

This is the part that trips most people up. RC number formats are not standardized across states — each state has its own structure. West Bengal uses a 10-digit numeric format. Delhi RC numbers typically start with a 2-letter prefix. Rajasthan's numbers are usually 14 digits long. If your number isn't working on the portal, double-check you have the right format for your state using the format table above.

Common reasons an RC number fails on the portal:

• Spaces or dashes included — most portals don't want these
• Wrong state selected — RC numbers are state-specific
• Entering an old card number after a card has been renewed or reissued
• Typo in one digit — especially easy with 12–14 digit numbers

What the Status Results Mean

Once you check your ration card number on the portal, you'll see one of these statuses:

• Active — Your card is valid and you can collect your entitlement at your assigned FPS shop.
• Approved — Your application has been approved but the physical card may still be processing. You can usually download the e-Ration Card right away.
• Pending — Your application or a recent update is still under review by the food department. This typically resolves in 15–30 days.
• Cancelled / Rejected — The card has been cancelled, either because of duplicate detection, income above the threshold, or voluntary surrender. Contact your local circle office to understand the reason.
• Suspended — Usually temporary. This can happen if your Aadhaar seeding is incomplete or if there's a pending KYC verification.

How to Find a Lost or Forgotten Ration Card Number

If you don't know your RC number, here are four ways to find it:

1. Search by name on your state portal — Most portals let you search by head-of-household name and district instead of the RC number. This usually returns the number along with other details.
2. Check via Aadhaar — Some states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and AP allow you to look up your RC number by Aadhaar number. Look for an "Aadhaar-based search" option on the state portal.
3. Visit your Fair Price Shop — Your FPS dealer keeps a physical register with all assigned card numbers. They can look it up against your name.
4. Call 1967 — The National Food Security Helpline can help you trace your card number if you provide your name, district, and address.

Check Ration Card Number on DigiLocker

DigiLocker is the Government of India's official document wallet. If your state has integrated with DigiLocker, you can check and download your ration card by linking it to your Aadhaar number — no RC number needed to start. Once fetched, the document also shows your full RC number at the top.

States with good DigiLocker integration include Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and several others. Visit digilocker.gov.in, sign in with Aadhaar, and search for "Ration Card" under your state's Food Department.

Check RC Number via Mera Ration App

The central government's Mera Ration app (available on Play Store and App Store) lets you check your ration card number and status by logging in with your Aadhaar-linked mobile OTP. It also shows nearby FPS shops and your monthly entitlement — useful if you've moved to a new city and need to use your card under the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme.

Checking RC Number for a New Application

If you applied for a new ration card recently and want to check the status using your application number (not yet an RC number), use the "Application Status" section on your state's portal. Most states issue a provisional application number when you submit the form — you can track approval progress with that. Once approved, an RC number is assigned and the card becomes available for download.

Common Questions When Checking Ration Card Numbers

Can I check someone else's RC number? Ration card details are public records on state PDS portals — you can look up any RC number and see the card category, FPS details, and enrolled members. Personal Aadhaar details are not shown.

Does checking my RC number online update any records? No. Checking your number is read-only. Nothing changes in your account when you verify it on the portal.

My card shows Active but I can't collect grain — why? Active card status and FPS transaction eligibility are separate. If your Aadhaar seeding is incomplete, your biometric authentication at the FPS machine will fail even if the card shows Active. Contact your district food officer to complete the e-KYC process.
