Why Your Card Status Matters More Than You Think

A lot of people assume their ration card works until it doesn't — they show up at the fair price shop and get turned away. That's the worst way to find out.

Your card can be Active, Pending, Suspended, or Cancelled. Only Active cards can collect subsidised ration. The others won't work at the FPS, no matter how long you've been a cardholder.

This became a bigger issue after September 2024, when the government made e-KYC mandatory under the NFSA. Millions of cardholders who hadn't linked Aadhaar biometrics got suspended — often without knowing it. Many found out only when they went to collect ration. Checking your status takes two minutes. Finding out at the shop is much worse.

Good news: All 36 states and union territories have online status checks. You don't need to visit any office just to find out where things stand.

Method 1 — NFSA National Portal

This is the easiest starting point if you're not sure which state portal to use, or if your state portal is throwing errors. The NFSA site at nfsa.gov.in covers all states and loads quickly on mobile data.

Steps: nfsa.gov.in

1
Go to nfsa.gov.inWorks on any browser — Chrome, Firefox, your phone's default browser.
2
Click "Citizen Corner" in the top menuIt's in the navigation bar on the homepage.
3
Select "Know Your Ration Card Status"This appears in the dropdown under Citizen Corner.
4
Enter your Ration Card NumberThe 10–14 digit number printed on your physical card.
5
Click "Get RC Details"You'll see your card status, category, number of members, and monthly grain quota.

The NFSA portal shows the basics. For finer details — like whether your e-KYC is pending, which FPS shop you're assigned to, or your last transaction date — use your state portal below.

Method 2 — Your State PDS Portal

State portals have more detail than the national one. If your card shows a problem on NFSA, the state portal usually tells you exactly what's wrong and what to bring to fix it. Find your state below.

StateOfficial PortalWhat You Need
Uttar Pradeshfcs.up.gov.inRC Number or Name
Maharashtrarcms.mahafood.gov.inRC Number or Aadhaar

Don't see your state? Search "[your state name] PDS ration card status" — every state has an official .gov.in portal. Avoid third-party sites that ask for payment or personal details beyond your RC or Aadhaar number.

Method 3 — Mera Ration 2.0 App

The government's Mera Ration 2.0 app is free on Android and iOS. It's useful when you're on the go and don't want to navigate a browser-based portal. Log in with the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar and you'll see your card status, monthly grain entitlement, and your nearest fair price shop on a map.

One thing the app does that the portals don't: it supports the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme. If you've moved to another state for work, the app shows what you're entitled to draw there, not just back home. More on this in the migrant worker section below.

Changed your mobile number? You'll need to update it before the app works. Visit any Common Service Centre (CSC) with your Aadhaar — it's a 10-minute process, not a full application.

What Each Status Actually Means

The portals use slightly different labels across states, but they generally map to five situations:

StatusWhat It MeansWhat To Do
✅ ActiveCard is valid. You can collect ration normally.Nothing. You're fine.
⏳ PendingYour application or change request is still under review at the district office.Wait 15–30 days. If it stays Pending after that, call your district Food Supply helpline.
⚠️ e-KYC PendingYour Aadhaar biometric hasn't been verified yet. This is the most common suspension reason since September 2024.Visit your nearest FPS or CSC with your Aadhaar card immediately. The biometric scan takes about 5 minutes.
❌ CancelledYour card has been removed from the PDS database — usually because of duplicate detection, ineligibility review, or extended non-collection.Visit your district Food Supply office with Aadhaar, address proof, and income certificate. Bring originals and photocopies.
🚫 SuspendedTemporarily blocked, often from a duplicate card flag or an address mismatch.Visit your nearest PDS office with both cards if it's a duplicate issue, or with corrected address documents.

Why Cards Go Inactive — The Real Reasons

Most inactive cards fall into one of these situations. Worth checking which applies before you go to the office:

On e-KYC cancellations: Cards cancelled specifically for e-KYC non-compliance can usually be reinstated within 90 days of the cancellation date. After that, you may need to file a fresh application. Don't delay.

How to Check Status Without Your Card Number

Lost or misplaced your RC number? A few options:

What to Do When the Portal Is Down

State PDS portals go down — especially around the 1st and 15th of the month when a lot of people check at the same time. A few things to try before giving up:

Never pay anyone to check your status. No legitimate service charges for this. All official portals and the 1967 helpline are free. If a website or person asks for money to "check" or "activate" your card, it's a scam.

For Migrant Workers: Checking Status From Another State

If you've moved from UP to Delhi, or from Bihar to Maharashtra for work, your home-state ration card still works — but only at fair price shops enrolled under the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme. As of 2026, ONORC is active in all 36 states and UTs.

To check your entitlement in the state you're currently living in:

  1. Open the Mera Ration 2.0 app and log in with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  2. The app shows your home-state card details plus your ONORC eligibility in your current state.
  3. Tap "Nearby FPS" to find an enrolled shop near you. Not every FPS accepts ONORC — the map shows only the ones that do.

One catch: you can only draw ration in one state per month. If your family back home already collected on your card this month, you can't draw again in your current city for the same month. The system is linked. This trips people up more often than you'd expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a new ration card application take to go Active?
Usually 30 to 45 days from the date of submission. During that window, the portal shows "Pending." If it's been more than 45 days, contact your district Food Supply office directly — sometimes applications stall because a document is unclear or a field needs correction and nobody notified you.
Can I check status using only my Aadhaar number?
Yes, in most states. UP, Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Bihar, and several others support Aadhaar-based search on their status pages. Look for a tab labelled "Search by Aadhaar" or "Aadhaar-based search" on the portal.
My card shows Cancelled. Can it be restored?
Usually, yes — if the cancellation was recent. Bring your Aadhaar, address proof (electricity bill or rent agreement), and income certificate to your nearest PDS or Food Supply office. If the cancellation was for e-KYC non-compliance and it happened within the last 90 days, reinstatement is typically straightforward. After 90 days, some states require a fresh application.
Is checking status online free?
Completely free — NFSA portal, all state portals, Mera Ration app, and the 1967 helpline. If any website or person asks for payment to check or fix your status, they're not official.
My name is spelled differently on my Aadhaar and ration card. Does that matter?
It can. A small spelling difference is sometimes enough to prevent Aadhaar linking, which then flags the card for e-KYC issues. Get the name corrected on whichever document is wrong — Aadhaar updates happen at Aadhaar Seva Kendras, ration card name corrections at your district Food Supply office.
We haven't collected ration in 4 months. Is the card still valid?
Possibly, but worth checking. Some states flag cards for non-collection after 3 consecutive months and others after 6. Go to your state portal and check the status now rather than finding out the hard way at the FPS.
