How to Add Name in Ration Card 2026 — Newborn, Marriage & Family Members

Had a baby? Got married? Moved in with an elderly parent? Adding a new member to your ration card is a simple process — and you can do it online in most states. Here's exactly how it works.
When Can You Add a New Member?
You can add a new member to your ration card in the following situations:
- Newborn child — add baby after birth certificate is issued
- New marriage — add spouse after marriage (with certificate)
- Dependent family member — elderly parent, sibling, or relative moving in
- Adoption — legally adopted child with court documents
⚠️ Important: The person you want to add must NOT already be on another ration card anywhere in India. Duplicate entries are flagged and rejected by the system.
Documents Needed to Add a New Member

In all cases, you'll also need the existing ration card number, the head of household's Aadhaar, and a passport-size photo of the new member (except for newborns).
How to Add a Name Online (Step-by-Step)

Visit Your State's Food Department PortalLogin to your account on the state PDS portal (e.g., fcs.up.gov.in for UP, wbpds.wb.gov.in for West Bengal).

Go to "Add Member" or "Modify Ration Card"Look under "Citizen Services" or "RC Update" section.

Fill in New Member's DetailsName, Aadhaar number, date of birth, relation to head, gender.

How to Add Offline (Visit Office)
If online isn't working, visit your nearest Tehsil/Block Food Supply Office with a filled-in RC modification form, original documents, and photocopies. Many states also allow additions at CSC centres.
Will the Monthly Quota Increase?
Yes! Once the new member is added and approved, your monthly ration entitlement increases by 5 kg per person per month under PHH (Priority Household) scheme. For AAY (Antyodaya) cards, the 35 kg family limit applies regardless of member count.

Can I add my newborn without a birth certificate?
In most states, a hospital-issued birth record is accepted temporarily, but you'll need the official municipal birth certificate within 90 days. Some states allow addition with a hospital discharge slip initially.
How long does it take to add a member?
Usually 15–30 days after submitting the application with complete documents. You'll get an SMS notification when the update is approved.
Can I add my mother-in-law who lives with us?
Yes, if she is no longer on any other ration card. She'll need to be removed from her old card first (get a deletion certificate), then you can add her to yours.
